I take Calla a few months forward. Football season has begun and we’re watching the quarterback for the Rams throw a bullet pass right into the receiver’s hands.

The announcer says, “That’s what I call pinpoint accuracy.”

Dad looks at me and shakes his head. “No, that was just okay. Your toss at Mr. Pierce? That was pinpoint accuracy.” Then he smiles and gives me a light punch in the shoulder.

I sense Calla smiling after we return.

“I was pleased to see you and your father bonding.”

“All because of something that occurred at Disneyland. I had so many experiences there. By the time we watched that football game, I’d been to Disneyland over one hundred times. Disneyland was like a second home to me.”

“I see why you wanted to share this with me, and I am glad you did. But you have something else we need to share, do you not?”

“No. I don’t think so. I made it through high school and would like to move on to college and the army.”

Calla waits a long time before replying.

“Robert, tell me the real reason you want to stop sharing. What happened the day after your father complimented you on your excellent aim?”

“I don’t need to re-experience it.”

“I think that you do. Take us forward one day.” It’s a command. And I comply. I feel cold inside. Fear claws at the edges of my mind. I can’t let it in.
